以普通玉米杂种优势利用为参考，总结普通玉米杂种优势群和杂种优势模式的特点，结合本课题组长期在甜玉米育种的研究与实践，提出符合东南区甜玉米杂种优势利用的“三角形杂优模式”，即热带种质×温带种质、热带种质×亚热带种质和亚热带种质×温带种质，选育出“闽双色”系列和“闽甜”系列等优良品种。利用分子标记、种质来源、生育期特点和配合力分析法进行热带、亚热带和温带种质群的分类，提供甜玉米骨干衍生系的改良思路和方法。
